Paper Mario runs from the N64 original (2000) through The Thousand-Year Door (2004), the platformer hybrid Super Paper Mario (2007), Sticker Star (2012), Color Splash (2016) and The Origami King (2020). Each game tells a standalone story, so release order is the recommended play order with no cliffhangers to dodge.
Newcomers should start with the 2024 Switch remake of The Thousand-Year Door. It is the fan favorite and the current form of the classic battle system. The Origami King comes next for a modern entry.

The May 23, 2024 Switch remake is the current version of The Thousand-Year Door; it replaces the GameCube original in this list. Super Paper Mario trades turn-based battles for platforming with a dimension-flip mechanic. Sticker Star and Color Splash use sticker and card combat and divide fans, but both stay listed as mainline games. Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam (2015) is a Mario and Luigi crossover, not a Paper Mario mainline entry, so it sits outside the list. No new Paper Mario has been announced as of September 2026.
