Five grand strategies in order.

About Paradox

Paradox Development built grand strategy around pause-and-issue orders on historical maps. Europa Universalis opened early-modern conquest in 2000. Hearts of Iron narrowed to World War 2 logistics in 2002. Crusader Kings shifted to dynasty roleplay in 2004.

Stellaris took the formula to procedurally generated galaxies in 2016. Crusader Kings 3 refined personalities and stress in 2020 and continues with expansions. Playing in release order shows tooltips, alerts and auto-pause maturing while core loop stays recognizable. Newcomers can start with Stellaris or Crusader Kings 3 for modern tutorials.

Good to know

Play in release order. The universes do not connect, so no story order exists across franchises. Within each series, play numerically: Europa Universalis 1 through 4, Hearts of Iron 2 through 4, Crusader Kings 1 through 3. Stellaris works standalone for sci-fi fans. Later expansions slot directly after their base games.
