About Parodius
Parodius (1988) parodies Gradius with penguins, octopi and Vegas showgirls across six shooters: the MSX original, Da! (1990), Gokujyou (1994), Jikkyou Oshaberi (1995), Sexy (1996) and the Paro Wars tactics spinoff (1997). The Gradius power-meter runs underneath every joke.
Release order is the difficulty curve; each game stands alone apart from the gags. The series is Japan-centric, with several entries never leaving home officially. The humor is bawdy 1990s arcade fare, which modern players should know going in. The collection re-releases keep the line available.
Good to know
Several entries stayed Japan-only, making imports or collections the practical path: the compilations are the versions to buy. Paro Wars switches genres to tactics, the odd one out. The Gradius mechanics underneath mean shooter fans adapt instantly. No new Parodius has been announced since 1997, so the six games are the set.
