About Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon began with Red Rescue Team on GBA and Blue Rescue Team on DS in 2005 from Chunsoft. You wake as a human turned Pokemon, take a personality quiz, form a rescue team and clear shifting dungeons. Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness followed on DS in Japan in 2007 with a dark future plot, then Explorers of Sky arrived in 2009 as the expanded version with bonus episodes.

Gates to Infinity moved the series to Nintendo 3DS in 2012 with 3D models and Paradise building. Super Mystery Dungeon followed on 3DS in 2015 with all 720 Pokemon recruitable. Rescue Team DX closed the run on Nintendo Switch in 2020 as a watercolor remake of Red and Blue with Mega Evolution. Play in release order, since stories stand alone while systems build.

Good to know

Play the six entries in release order and treat each pair as one stop, picking either version. Explorers of Sky replaces Time and Darkness for most players, and Rescue Team DX replaces the 2005 originals. The Japan-only WiiWare Adventure Squad trio from 2009 sits outside this list. No new entry had been announced as of October 2026, with DX from 2020 the latest, so the run is complete. Start with Rescue Team or Explorers based on taste, then follow release.
