About Space Harrier
Space Harrier (1985) invented the super-scaler rail shooter: Yu Suzuki's checkerboard landscapes rushing past at impossible speed across the arcade original. Space Harrier 3-D (1988) and II (1988) iterate the formula on Master System and Mega Drive, while Planet Harriers (2000) reboots it for Naomi arcades.
Release order is the speed curve; each game stands alone apart from the Harrier craft. The 3DS port of the original is the definitive home version with its widescreen and extra mode. The series' music and voice samples (get ready!) are gaming landmarks. No sequel has followed Planet Harriers.
Good to know
Space Harrier II is a Mega Drive sequel rather than a port, with original stages worth playing. Planet Harriers stayed arcade-only in most regions, making it the rarity of the set. The 32X port of the original is a faithful curiosity for hardware fans. Harrier cameos across Sega games (Shenmue, Bayonetta) keep the brand alive. The four releases are the set.
