About The Behemoth

The Behemoth is a small independent studio in San Diego, founded in 2003 by John Baez, Dan Paladin and Tom Fulp. Its first console game was Alien Hominid (2004), a hand-drawn run-and-gun that started as a Flash game on Newgrounds. Castle Crashers followed in 2008 on Xbox Live Arcade and became one of the platform's best sellers, with a remaster in 2015.

BattleBlock Theater arrived in 2013 with story-driven platforming and a popular level editor, while Pit People (2018) took the studio into turn-based strategy. Alien Hominid Invasion (2023) reimagined the first game as a co-op arcade shooter. In July 2024 the studio announced updates for its older games while prototyping new titles, so more is likely on the way.

Good to know

Release order is the play order here. The four games share art and humor but no story continuity, so you can start anywhere, though release order shows how the studio design evolved. Alien Hominid Invasion is a separate game from the 2004 original, not a replacement. Castle Crashers Remastered is the version to buy. The 2024 roadmap promised a Painter Boss Paradise update for Castle Crashers plus console ports, with a new game in prototype.
