About Amityville
Amityville starts with the 1979 Lutz haunting at 112 Ocean Avenue, ending with the family fleeing. Amityville II from 1982 rewinds to the DeFeo murders as a prequel, while 3-D from 1983 follows the original with a new owner ignoring the prequel over a lawsuit.
The 2005 remake retells the Lutz story, Awakening from 2017 reboots meta with the old films existing inside it, and the Murders from 2019 recounts DeFeo again. Dozens of indies orbit beyond these six essentials. Two studio reimaginings are in development with no dates. Watch the essentials in release order.
Good to know
Release order is recommended even though part II is a prequel, since its reveal assumes the 1979 haunting. Later entries splinter into haunted-object stories and meta reboots rather than one line. Awakening treats the earlier films as movies inside its world. The indie flood past the essentials is skippable. Start with 1979 for the house rules everything riffs on.
