About Back to the Future
Zemeckis and Gale built the trilogy to be seen as released. Back to the Future (1985) sets up 1955, Part II (1989) jumps Marty to 2015 and back through his own past, and Part III (1990) picks up from that ending and moves the whole thing to 1885. The last two were shot together and opened six months apart.
Beyond the films, Back to the Future: The Animated Series ran 26 episodes on CBS across 1991 and 1992 with Christopher Lloyd back as Doc, and the stage musical is touring North America and the UK after closing in London's West End on April 12, 2026.
Good to know
There is no fourth film and Gale says there never will be, repeating that position in April 2026. Telltale's five-episode Back to the Future: The Game (2010-2011) is the only game with an original story. The Harvey (1991-1993) and IDW (2015-2017) comics are side stories, and Gale treats the animated series as its own timeline.
