About Barbara Loden
Barbara Loden directed Wanda, a raw portrait of a Pennsylvania mother who leaves her kids and drifts with small-time crook Mr. Dennis. Shot on location with nonactors in 1970, the film won Venice critics prizes.
Loden also made shorts and taught acting while developing unmade projects about working women. Watching Wanda in full shows her patient takes on bars, buses and factories without cutting away. The film stands alone, so no series order exists beyond giving its slow middle the same attention as its crime end. Later documentaries about Loden can be watched after the feature.
Good to know
Watch Wanda start to finish in one sitting. The film moves from kitchen arguments to road motels in fixed order, so skipping ahead hides how apathy turns to brief agency. There is no sequel in continuity. New viewers should expect a quiet 1970s pace that rewards patience more than plot twists. Stay through the long final stretches without pausing, since the ending lands harder unbroken.
