About Akira Kurosawa
Akira Kurosawa directed thirty features between 1943 and 1993, starting with Sanshiro Sugata, then Drunken Angel in 1948, Stray Dog in 1949, Rashomon in 1950 and Ikiru in 1952. Seven Samurai arrived in 1954, Throne of Blood in 1957, The Hidden Fortress in 1958, Yojimbo in 1961, Sanjuro in 1962 and High and Low in 1963.
Red Beard followed in 1965, Dodeska-den in 1970, Dersu Uzala in 1975, Kagemusha in 1980 and Ran in 1985. Dreams came in 1990, Rhapsody in August in 1991 and Madadayo in 1993. Watch in release order, since the early crime pictures build tools the later epics reuse.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Men Who Tread on the Tigers Tail was filmed in 1945 but held until 1952, so it sits by production date here. Yojimbo and Sanjuro share a wandering hero but work as separate stories. Start with Rashomon, Seven Samurai or Yojimbo if thirty films feels like too many.
