About Teinosuke Kinugasa
Teinosuke Kinugasa directed avant-garde silents and Oscar-winning color samurai. Crossroads follows a brothel sister's jealousy in 1928. A Page of Madness traps viewers in a rain-soaked asylum in 1926 but recut widely later.
Gate of Hell closes the essential run with a Heian guard obsessed with a lady in 1953 and won the foreign-language Oscar. Watching in order shows Kinugasa moving from expressionist cuts to Eastmancolor pageantry while keeping the same obsession theme. The films share madness rather than characters.
Good to know
Watch Crossroads, then Page of Madness, then Gate of Hell. The silents survive in restored cuts that play best with benshi notes. Starting with Gate first is tempting for color, yet the earlier silents explain where Kinugasa's flame imagery comes from. All three stream with subtitles via restorations.
