About Sadao Yamanaka
Sadao Yamanaka directed talkative samurai films before dying at twenty-eight, with only three features surviving intact. Sazen Tange and the Pot Worth a Million Ryo spoofs sword myths in 1935. Kochiyama Soshun follows an Edo fixer in 1936.
Humanity and Paper Balloons closes the run with unemployed ronin and paper sellers facing suicide in 1937. Watching in order shows Yamanaka moving from parody to tragedy in two years. The films share low-ranking samurai focus rather than characters, so order reveals tone darkening.
Good to know
Watch in release order. The three titles are standalone, so no plot spoilers carry over at all. Starting with Sazen Tange first shows Yamanaka's comedy before the later sorrow. All three stream with subtitles via Criterion. Lost silents like Coin of the Soul can only be read about after these survivors.
