About Bertrand Tavernier
Bertrand Tavernier debuted with The Clockmaker in 1974, a quiet father and son crime drama starring Philippe Noiret. Let Joy Reign Supreme followed in 1975 and The Judge and the Assassin in 1976, both period pieces with sharp social judgment. Coup de Torchon arrived in 1981, moving a corrupt policeman story to colonial Africa with bleak humor.
A Sunday in the Country followed in 1984 as a gentle late life portrait, then Round Midnight in 1986 as an American jazz story. Life and Nothing But arrived in 1989 with a First World War missing persons plot, and Captain Conan closed this selection in 1996 with a hard look at soldiers after combat. Good to know
These are separate stories with no shared continuity, so there is no alternate timeline to reconstruct. Release order is the clear path because Tavernier reused actors like Noiret across different roles and refined his historical method film by film. Later works such as Safe Conduct from 2002 fall outside this key eight. Tavernier died in 2021, so this guide is closed and complete.
