About Butcher's
Butcher's fed postwar Britain with low budget second features for working class industrial towns. The core of this set is the Paul Temple crime series, with Send for Paul Temple, Calling Paul Temple, Paul Temple's Triumph and Paul Temple Returns tracking the detective through four brisk cases. Around them sit the Victorian shocker The Story of Shirley Yorke, the horror fable The Monkey's Paw and the Jack the Ripper chiller Room to Let.
The later picks show the studio keeping pace with fifties tastes, from Lewis Gilbert's hospital drama Emergency Call to John Guillermin's spy story Operation Diplomat and the Soho nightclub thriller Assignment Redhead. Renamed a distributor in 1954, it kept releasing Nettlefold shot programmers. Watch in release order for the crime strand to build.
Good to know
Butcher's produced or handled hundreds of features from the First World War onward, so these ten are a starter set of the best known postwar titles, not a full filmography. The films are standalone programmers with no shared continuity, which makes release order the simple viewing path. The company moved from production toward distribution in the mid fifties. No new Butcher's films are expected, since the studio era closed decades ago.
