About Cocoon
Cocoon from 1985 follows Florida retirees finding alien cocoons in a rented pool with youth effects, directed by Ron Howard. The film mixes retirement home plots with Antarean rescue threads and won effects and score Oscars.
Cocoon: The Return from November 1988 brings most of the cast back for a rescue return trip under Daniel Petrie, with Dennehy reduced to cameo. No further film exists, and the 2026 anime Cocoon about Himeyuri students is a different property entirely. Viral sequel rumors hold no studio weight.
Good to know
Watch the 1985 film, then The Return in that order. The sequel assumes the Antarean trip and the couples behind it, so it plays flat without the original first. The two films form a closed duology with no hook left open at all. Do not confuse either with the 2026 anime of the same name, which shares nothing with these.
