About Coming to America
Coming to America follows Prince Akeem fleeing an arranged marriage for Queens with Semmi, working menial jobs while courting Lisa McDowell. The 1988 original ends with Lisa accepting the prince after the barbershop regulars debate romance through the whole trip.
Coming 2 America from 2021 brings Akeem back as king facing a succession rule that needs a male heir, which reveals a Queens son he never knew. The sequel reuses the barbershop crew, the Soul Glo jokes and the McDowell family, so the callbacks only land after the original trip.
Good to know
Watch the 1988 original first, then the 2021 sequel last for the full payoff. Story order matches release order across the 30 year gap, so one list covers the crown. The sequel assumes the Lisa romance and the barbershop gags known, so do not lead with it. No third film has been dated as of this check.
