About David Lean

David Lean directed In Which We Serve in 1942 with Noel Coward, then This Happy Breed, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, Great Expectations and Oliver Twist through the 1940s. The Passionate Friends, Madeleine, The Sound Barrier and Hobson's Choice followed into 1954.

Summertime arrived in 1955, The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957, Lawrence of Arabia in 1962, Doctor Zhivago in 1965, Ryan's Daughter in 1970 and A Passage to India in 1984. Watch in release order. The intimate 1940s pictures build the cutting craft the desert epics later spend.

Good to know

Each film stands alone, so no chronological order exists. Brief Encounter, Great Expectations, Kwai, Lawrence and Zhivago make the clearest core if sixteen films feels like a lot. The run closed with A Passage to India in 1984, seven years before Lean's death in 1991. Start with the 1940s work to see the epic style being built.
