About David Yates
David Yates took over Harry Potter with Order of the Phoenix in 2007 and stayed through Deathly Hallows Part 2 in 2011. Across those four films he set the darker tone and steady visual style that defined the end of the series, working with the same core cast from Daniel Radcliffe to Emma Watson.
After Potter he stayed in big studio fantasy with The Legend of Tarzan in 2016 and the Fantastic Beasts trilogy from 2016 to 2022. He then changed pace with Pain Hustlers in 2023, a Florida crime drama with Emily Blunt and Chris Evans. Release order is the right way to watch, since it follows his growth from franchise closer to world builder.
Good to know
This is a director guide, so it answers a different question from the Harry Potter guide on this site. That post covers the Wizarding World story alone, while this one tracks Yates across franchises. Watch the four Potter films first, then Tarzan as a standalone break, then Fantastic Beasts in order. Pain Hustlers is fully separate and can be watched any time.
