About Diner de Cons
Le Diner de Cons from April 1998 stars Jacques Villeret as Pignon and Thierry Lhermitte as Brochant hosting weekly idiot dinners. Francis Veber directs his own play with 9 million tickets and a back spasm farce. The phone and boomerang gags drive every turn.
Dinner for Schmucks from July 2010 remakes it with Steve Carell as Barry and Paul Rudd as Tim in Los Angeles with mouse art. Jay Roach directs with no link to Paris cast. No third dinner was made, so the pair forms the set with the play as root.
Good to know
Watch the 1998 French film before the 2010 US remake since Schmucks replays the phone and tax gags faster each scene. The original assumes nothing beyond Paris snobbery and weekly dinners. The play runs longer than both films with extra guests and calls. Treat the pair as closed takes on one stage idea with no further dinners dated.
