About Don Hertzfeldt
Hertzfeldt drew Billy's Balloon in 1998 and Rejected in 2000, the latter Oscar nominated for Best Animated Short in 2001 and self distributed through Bitter Films. The Meaning of Life arrived in 2005, then the Bill trilogy with Everything Will Be OK in 2006 and I Am So Proud of You in 2008, both shot on 35mm with stick figures.
It's Such a Beautiful Day compiled the Bill run in 2012 for a feature cut. World of Tomorrow came in 2015 with Julia Pott as Emily, winning at Sundance and earning an Oscar nomination, followed by Episode Two in 2017 and Episode Three in 2020. The short ME from 2022 closes the run. Watch in release order for the line work and ache to build.
Good to know
Watch shorts then features in release order for the full effect. The Bill trilogy plays as one film in the Beautiful Day cut, so use that 2012 version over separate shorts for a first watch. World of Tomorrow parts two and three link through Emily clones but stand alone. ME from 2022 is the latest short, with no next feature dated as of October 2026.
