About Ernest
The Ernest films star Jim Varney as the well meaning bumbler Ernest P. Worrell, stumbling through camp, Christmas, jail, Halloween, basketball, school, Africa and the army. Nine films ran from 1987 to 1998, each a standalone Ernest vehicle with Varney often doubling as the villains.
Watch in release order. The films share a hero but no plot, so the order is about watching the formula evolve from theatrical entries to video premieres rather than following a story. Start with Goes to Camp or Saves Christmas for the peak, then run the rest in sequence for the completist arc.
Good to know
Varney died in 2000, which closed the series: every entry depends on his performance, and no recast was attempted. The Hey Vern television show sits outside the film list as its own sketch run. The later video entries reuse the formula faithfully, so completionists lose nothing by watching straight through.
