About Fatih Akin
Fatih Akin started with Short Sharp Shock in 1998, a Hamburg crime story drawn from the neighborhood he grew up in, then made the road romance In July in 2000 and the family restaurant drama Solino in 2002. Head-On arrived in 2004 and won the Golden Bear, with Sibel Kekilli and Birol Unel as two self destructive outsiders bound by a marriage of convenience.
The Edge of Heaven followed in 2007 and won best screenplay at Cannes for its interlinked German Turkish mourning story. Soul Kitchen came in 2009 as a lighter Hamburg comedy, then In the Fade in 2017 won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. The Golden Glove closed this pick in 2019. Watch in release order, since each film reworks migration, guilt and belonging from a new angle.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Release order tracks his move from Hamburg street films to cross border dramas and back to neighborhood comedy. Newer work such as Rhinegold from 2022 and Amrum from 2025 falls outside this starter pick. Start with Head-On, then The Edge of Heaven, if eight films feels like too many.
