About Final Fantasy (films)
Final Fantasy films share a name and themes, never a story. Spirits Within (2001) is a photorealistic sci-fi epic that bankrupted Square's film studio on release. Advent Children (2005) continues Final Fantasy VII's story two years after the game and is essential for VII fans. Kingsglaive (2016) runs alongside Final Fantasy XV's opening as a feature-length companion.
Watch by interest, not order: VII fans go straight to Advent Children, XV players pair Brotherhood and Kingsglaive with the game, and Spirits Within is a standalone curio. Release order across all four shows Square's evolving idea of what a game film should be. The Complete edition of Advent Children adds 26 minutes and is the version to buy.
Good to know
Each film belongs to a different continuity, so there is no saga to assemble: the connective tissue is crystals, summons and Cid variants. Brotherhood's five episodes slot before and during XV's first chapters and pair naturally with Kingsglaive. Advent Children Complete replaces the original cut entirely. No new Final Fantasy film had been announced at the last check, with the franchise focused on games and the VII remake trilogy.
