About Ghostbusters
Ghostbusters runs on two tracks that share the 1984 start but split afterward. The original films arrived in 1984 and 1989, lay quiet for decades, then returned with Afterlife in 2021 and Frozen Empire in 2024, both following the Spengler family in Oklahoma and New York.
Animation fills the gaps: The Real Ghostbusters (1986 to 1991) and Extreme Ghostbusters (1997) kept the classic team alive for kids, while Ghostbusters: Night Shift is dated 2027 on Netflix and is set in 1994 between the original films and the Afterlife revival.
Good to know
Release order and story order match except for Night Shift, which rewinds to 1994 despite arriving last. New viewers can watch the four live action films and skip the cartoons, but The Real Ghostbusters explains why the franchise stayed popular during the long film gap. The 2016 reboot is a separate continuity and works as an optional extra.
