About Gints Zilbalodis
Gints Zilbalodis animates lonely journeys with no dialogue. Away from 2019 follows a boy and a bird crossing a desert island landscape, made almost entirely solo. Flow from 2024 puts a grey cat on a drifting boat with a capybara, a lemur, a dog and a secretarybird after a flood. It premiered at Cannes in May 2024 and won the animated feature Oscar in March 2025.
Both films run under 90 minutes and share the same patient camera drift. His earlier shorts stay optional and off this list. Limbo, a minimalist follow up feature, is funded and aimed at 2028 with no exact day yet.
Good to know
Watch Away before Flow. The two share no plot, but Away teaches his wordless grammar at a smaller scale so Flow lands harder. The shorts from 2010 to 2017 are student scale experiments and stay out of the film list. Limbo is confirmed through Latvian film funding and producer interviews, dated 2028 in trade reports. It sits last until a firm day lands.
