About Jeff Nichols
Jeff Nichols debuted with Shotgun Stories in 2007 about feuding Arkansas half brothers. Take Shelter followed in 2011 with Michael Shannon building a storm shelter, then Mud in 2012 with two boys hiding a fugitive on the Mississippi. Midnight Special arrived in 2016 as a sci-fi chase about a boy with powers.
Loving came later in 2016 as the true story of the couple behind the 1967 Supreme Court case, and The Bikeriders in 2023 followed a Chicago motorcycle club across the 1960s. The films share actors but no plot, so release order tracks his Arkansas roots to wider stories.
Good to know
Each film stands alone, so watch oldest to newest. Shannon appears in most but plays a new part every time. Mud and Take Shelter pair well as a double bill of fathers under pressure. Loving breaks the run as true history. Nichols has no dated next feature, so the 2023 club film stays last until one is announced.
