About Jia Zhangke
Jia Zhangke films China changing under his actors. Xiao Wu from 1997 follows a pickpocket in Fenyang, Platform from 2000 tracks a troupe from the seventies to the nineties, Unknown Pleasures from 2002 watches Datong youth on pop culture. The three form the Hometown Trilogy, none released openly at home.
The World from 2004 traps migrants in a Beijing theme park, Still Life from 2006 won the Golden Lion for Three Gorges demolition sides. 24 City from 2008 blends factory interviews, A Touch of Sin from 2013 turns four violent tales. Mountains May Depart from 2015 spans decades, Ash Is Purest White from 2018 follows a gangster lover, Caught by the Tides from 2024 re cuts old footage into a new arc.
Good to know
Watch in release order. Platform runs 154 minutes in a longer director cut, either works. Still Life Golden Lion win in 2006 marks the midpoint. A Touch of Sin plays episodic, so pauses between tales help. Caught by the Tides reuses prior shoot material, which lands better after the earlier run. Start with Xiao Wu for roots or Still Life for the prize peak.
