About Joker
Joker (2019) follows Arthur Fleck, a Gotham party clown whose firing and rejection push him toward murder and a riot that kills the Waynes. It premiered at Venice on August 31, 2019 and opened in the US on October 4, 2019. Joker: Folie a Deux (2024) picks up in Arkham, with Arthur awaiting trial while Harleen Quinzel pulls him toward music and a televised trial that decides his fate.
Todd Phillips directed both films for Warner Bros as a closed duology outside the DC Universe. The second is a courtroom story with musical numbers, not a new Batman origin. Phillips has said his time in this Gotham ends here, with no third film planned, so the two films form one complete arc.
Good to know
Watch in release order, since Folie a Deux assumes you know the Murray Franklin shooting and the riot that made Arthur famous. There is no separate chronological order to build, as the sequel starts directly after the first film's ending. Skip the trailers if you can, since they reveal the trial outcome beats. Treat the duology as separate from The Batman and the DC Universe.
