About Juzo Itami
Juzo Itami directed ten satires from 1984 to 1997 skewering funerals, food and taxes. The Funeral premiered in 1984 as a sharp family ceremony comedy that became a local hit. Tampopo followed in 1985 as a ramen western about a widow shop. A Taxing Woman arrived in 1987, its return in 1988, then Supermarket Woman in 1996 closed the retail run.
All films are standalone with new casts, so release order shows his style growing from rites to noodles to audits. Watch the 1984 debut, the 1985 noodle tale, then the tax and market films in sequence. There are no sequels beyond the Taxing Woman return, so the five key films plus later works form the full director path from first rite to final shop.
Good to know
Watch The Funeral first from 1984, since it sets Itami satire on ritual. Tampopo from 1985 then expands the food lens, so it plays as the signature second step. The Taxing Woman pair continues the audit jokes, which is why release order works best. The run spans five key satires plus later works with no shared plot. Release order keeps rite jokes and audit beats clear.
