About Karel Reisz
Czech born Karel Reisz started in Free Cinema documentaries before his debut feature Saturday Night and Sunday Morning in 1960 with Albert Finney helped define kitchen sink realism. Night Must Fall followed in 1964, Morgan in 1966 with David Warner, and Isadora in 1968 with Vanessa Redgrave kept him close to restless outsiders and location based British production.
The Gambler in 1974 with James Caan moved him to American stories, followed by Who'll Stop the Rain in 1978 with Nick Nolte. The French Lieutenant's Woman in 1981 with Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons adapted John Fowles through a Harold Pinter script, and Sweet Dreams in 1985 with Jessica Lange as Patsy Cline closed this run. Watch in release order since each phase builds on the last.
Good to know
These are standalone features with no shared continuity, so there is no alternate chronological order to untangle. Reisz died on November 25, 2002, and his later cinema feature Everybody Wins from 1990 sits outside this eight film core. Start with Saturday Night and Sunday Morning for the British New Wave context, then try Morgan for comedy and The French Lieutenant's Woman for the literary peak. The American titles play best after the early British four.
