About Lewis Gilbert

Lewis Gilbert directed more than 40 features, starting with war stories like Reach for the Sky in 1956 on Douglas Bader and Carve Her Name with Pride in 1958 on Violette Szabo. Alfie arrived in 1966 with Michael Caine talking straight to camera, then You Only Live Twice in 1967 took Bond to Japan with Roald Dahl scripting.

The Spy Who Loved Me followed in 1977 and Moonraker in 1979, both large Roger Moore adventures built around huge sets. Educating Rita came in 1983 with Michael Caine and Julie Walters, then Shirley Valentine in 1989 with Pauline Collins. Gilbert died in 2018, so this run is closed. Watch in release order, since each phase answers the last one.

Good to know

These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. The three Bond titles fit here as Gilbert films, not as the full Bond saga. Alfie uses direct address that returns in Shirley Valentine. Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine both began as Willy Russell stage plays. Start with Alfie or Educating Rita for the small films, or You Only Live Twice for Bond scale.
