About Lindsay Anderson
Lindsay Anderson came from Free Cinema documentaries before This Sporting Life in 1963, a rugby league drama with Richard Harris as a Yorkshire miner turned player. If.... followed in 1968, with Malcolm McDowell as Mick Travis leading a revolt at a public school. It won the Palme dOr and remains Andersons best known film.
O Lucky Man! arrived in 1973, reuniting Anderson with McDowell for a picaresque trip across Britain as coffee salesman Mick Travis. Britannia Hospital closed the trilogy in 1982, a hospital satire with McDowell returning as a reporter. Anderson died in 1994, so the filmography is finished. Watch in release order to follow Travis from school rebellion to national portrait.
Good to know
The three Mick Travis films share a character name and star but not a strict plot continuity, so release order still works best. This Sporting Life is not a Travis film but it sets up Andersons class concerns and is worth seeing first. Britannia Hospital divided critics on release and plays stranger now than in 1982. Andersons shorts and TV work like O Dreamland sit outside this short feature path.
