About Louis Malle

Louis Malle began with Elevator to the Gallows in 1958, scored by Miles Davis, then followed it the same year with The Lovers. Zazie in the Metro arrived in 1960 and The Fire Within in 1963, establishing his range from playfulness to bleak drama. Murmur of the Heart followed in 1971 with a frank coming of age story set in postwar France.

Lacombe, Lucien arrived in 1974, Pretty Baby in 1978, and Atlantic City in 1980, the latter earning wide American acclaim. My Dinner with Andre followed in 1981 as a talk driven two hander, and Au revoir les enfants closed this selection in 1987 with his most autobiographical war story. Watch these ten in release order.

Good to know

These films are standalone stories with no shared plot, so there is no separate chronological order to follow. Release order works best because it shows Malle shifting between France and the United States while returning to youth, guilt, and occupation. Later works such as Damage from 1992 and Vanya on 42nd Street from 1994 fall outside this key ten. Malle died in 1995, so this selection is closed.
