About Luchino Visconti
Luchino Visconti began with Ossessione in 1943, an early neorealist crime story, then La Terra Trema in 1948 and Bellissima in 1951. Senso followed in 1954 as a color period break, with White Nights in 1957 and Rocco and His Brothers in 1960 returning to poor families and city migration.
The Leopard arrived in 1963 and won the Palme d’Or for its portrait of Sicilian aristocracy in decline. The Damned followed in 1969, Death in Venice in 1971 and The Innocent in 1976, his final feature. The films are separate stories, so release order is the clear path and shows spectacle and opera influence growing over time.
Good to know
These are standalone films with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Visconti died in 1976, which closes the filmography, and The Innocent was completed while he was in poor health. Viewers sensitive to pacing should know the later historical films run long. The Leopard exists in several cuts, so pick the longest restored version available and watch Rocco and His Brothers before it.
