Two films, original then prequel.

About Marley and Me

Marley and Me opened December 25, 2008 from David Frankel about John and Jenny Grogan raising lab Marley through marriage and kids. It runs 115 minutes with Owen Wilson and Aniston and grossed 255 million. Marley and Me The Puppy Years arrived June 1, 2011 direct to video as prequel.

The prequel runs 86 minutes with Bodi training pup Marley for contest with talking voice by Grayson Russell. Stories stand alone as adult dog versus puppy, so either works first, but release order shows Marley growth backward. No third film has been announced, so these two are complete.

Good to know

Watch the 2008 film first for the full life arc ending that moves many viewers, then Puppy Years for light kid comedy. The original carries PG for theme and language, the prequel is softer PG with talking dogs. The prequel ignores original continuity details, so treat it as side tale. Both run under two hours with dog chaos throughout.
