About Maurice Elvey
Maurice Elvey (1887 to 1967) was among the most prolific British directors, with silent dramas, war films and early talkies. This set opens with Mademoiselle from Armentieres from 1926, then Hindle Wakes from 1927, widely seen as his silent peak and filmed around Manchester and Blackpool. Balaclava from 1928 and High Treason from 1929 show large scale history and early science fiction sound.
Sally in Our Alley from 1931 gave Gracie Fields her screen debut, The Lodger from 1932 took on the Ripper story, This Week of Grace from 1933 stayed with Fields, and The Tunnel from 1935 closed this slice with an Atlantic tunnel plan. Release order is the simple path since the plots do not link.
Good to know
Elvey directed nearly 200 films from 1913 to 1957 and produced dozens more, so eight titles can only introduce him. Silent fans often start with the 1927 Hindle Wakes rather than his 1918 version of the same play. This guide follows the Hammer and Miike idea on this site: a manageable pick with the full count named plainly. He died in 1967, so the filmography is closed.
