About Nanny McPhee
Nanny McPhee began in 2005 with Emma Thompson writing and starring as the warted nanny teaching the seven Brown children five lessons. Returns (2010) moves her to the wartime Green farm with Maggie Gyllenhaal's mother and the cousins. Both films run the when-you-need-me lesson structure with the nanny beautifying as the children learn.
Thompson planned a third film that never shot, leaving the farm outing as the close rather than a trilogy end. No revival has been announced, with the two households standing as the complete run for family viewing.
Good to know
Watch the Brown film first, then the Green farm sequel, since the lesson structure and the nanny's arrival logic assume the original. The sequel plays standalone around its own five lessons, so kids can start there in a pinch. Nurse Matilda books share only the premise with new families, safe as reading extras after either film.
