About A Nightmare on Elm Street
A Nightmare on Elm Street follows Freddy Krueger, a killer who stalks teenagers in their dreams. Wes Craven's 1984 original sets the rules, parts 2 through 5 expand the dream powers through the late 1980s, and Freddy's Dead in 1991 was meant to close the story. New Nightmare in 1994 steps outside it as a meta film where the cast plays themselves.
Freddy vs Jason in 2003 crosses Elm Street with Friday the 13th and belongs in both guides. The 2010 remake retells the original with Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy and works as an alternate start. No new film has a date, so the nine films below are the complete set for now.
Good to know
Release order is the way to watch, since each sequel builds on the last survivor group. New Nightmare breaks continuity on purpose: it is set in the real world where the films exist, so it plays best after Freddy's Dead rather than inside the timeline. The 1988 Freddy's Nightmares anthology series is optional and stays out of the main list. Freddy vs Jason assumes you know both killers, which is why it sits near the end here.
