About Peter Watkins

English filmmaker Peter Watkins pioneered the docudrama on BBC television with Culloden in 1964, which restaged the 1746 battle with modern reporters on the field, and The War Game in 1966, a banned nuclear war simulation that later won an Oscar for documentary feature. Privilege in 1967 was his first non television feature, a pop star satire with Paul Jones that flopped on release.

Punishment Park followed in 1971, an American desert pseudo documentary about tribunals and forced marches inspired by Vietnam era repression and the Kent State shootings. Edvard Munch in 1974 ran over three hours on Norwegian television with a cinema cut after, tracing the painter through archival texture and direct address. Watkins died on October 30, 2025 at age 90.
