About Roberto Rossellini

Roberto Rossellini helped define Italian neorealism with his War Trilogy: Rome Open City in 1945, Paisan in 1946 and Germany Year Zero in 1948, all shot on damaged streets with mixed casts. L’Amore followed in 1948, then Stromboli in 1950 and The Flowers of St. Francis in 1950, which shifted toward faith and personal crisis.

Europe ’51 arrived in 1952, Journey to Italy in 1954 and General Della Rovere in 1959, a return to wartime themes that won the Venice Golden Lion. The Rise to Power of Louis XIV in 1966 closes the list and points to his later television histories. These ten are standalone stories, so release order best shows his style change.

Good to know

These films share no plot continuity, so there is no separate chronological order to follow. Rossellini died in 1977, and the wider filmography runs to more than 50 directing credits including shorts and television, so this is a ten film starter path rather than every title. Start with the War Trilogy, then try Stromboli and Journey to Italy. Louis XIV plays best last, after the neorealist work is familiar.
