About Pete's Dragon
Pete's Dragon began with Disney's 1977 musical about orphan Pete escaping the Gogans with invisible dragon Elliott to Passamaquoddy. The film mixes animation with Helen Reddy's Nora and Mickey Rooney's Lampy around the lighthouse. The 2016 remake from David Lowery rewinds to Millhaven with Pete raised by Elliott in the woods against the timber company.
Both versions tell the complete friendship with no shared cast, so either starts clean for its generation. No sequel to either has been announced, leaving the remake as the current telling rather than a series start.
Good to know
Watch the 1977 original first for the classic songs and the invisible-dragon gags, then the 2016 remake as its own forest telling. The remake plays quieter and sadder on purpose, which lands better with the original's warmth fresh. The Elliott plush and book spinoffs share only the dragon design, safe as extras after either film.
