About Pier Paolo Pasolini
Pier Paolo Pasolini debuted with Accattone in 1961 and Mamma Roma in 1962, both set among Rome’s poor suburbs with nonprofessional leads. The Gospel According to St. Matthew followed in 1964, then The Hawks and the Sparrows in 1966, Oedipus Rex in 1967 and Teorema in 1968, each mixing Catholic imagery with Marxist argument.
Medea arrived in 1969 with Maria Callas, followed by The Decameron in 1971, Arabian Nights in 1974 and Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom in 1975. His Trilogy of Life also includes The Canterbury Tales from 1972. The films stand alone, so release order shows the clear arc from street realism to literary adaptation and shock.
Good to know
There is no shared continuity here, so chronological order matches release order and needs no second list. Pasolini died in 1975 shortly before Salo opened, which fixes this filmography as complete. Salo contains graphic sexual violence and should be saved for last or skipped after reading about it. The Canterbury Tales from 1972 sits between the Decameron and Arabian Nights for viewers who want the full Trilogy of Life.
