About Short Circuit
Short Circuit (1986) gives a military robot a lightning-strike soul: Number 5, later Johnny 5, escapes Nova Robotics and learns about life from Ally Sheedy while Steve Guttenberg stalls the army. Short Circuit 2 (1988) sends Johnny to the city, befriending a street hustler and facing reprogramming.
The two films form one continuity in release order, tracking Johnny's growth from escapee to citizen. The original's practical robot effects, with dozens of Johnny 5 puppets, still charm; the sequel leans harder into buddy comedy. Fisher Stevens's character changed between films in ways modern viewers will notice and the production has acknowledged.
Good to know
The sequel recasts the love interest and shifts tone toward kids' adventure, so expect a different film rather than a repeat. A remake has been discussed for years without filming. The Johnny 5 full-size replicas remain convention staples, which says everything about the design's staying power. Both films close their stories, so the duology is complete as released.
