About Starship Troopers
Starship Troopers from 1997 is Paul Verhoeven's satirical military epic about Johnny Rico's path from recruit to officer in a war against the Arachnid Bugs. A box office disappointment at release, it grew into a cult classic and launched four sequels across two decades.
The sequels run from Hero of the Federation in 2004 through Traitor of Mars in 2017, with the CGI series Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles airing 40 episodes in 1999 and 2000. All five films share one continuity. Roughnecks borrows from the films and the Heinlein novel but stands in its own universe, as does the 1988 Japanese OVA.
Good to know
Watch the films in release order and treat Roughnecks as an optional side trip. The films tell one linear story from 1997 to 2017, while the series remixes the same material in its own continuity. The 1988 OVA is the most faithful to Heinlein's novel but is hard to find and disconnected from everything else, so it stays out of both lists.
