Ten landmarks from across Soderbergh's directing career, in release order.

About Steven Soderbergh

Steven Soderbergh (born 1963) won the Palme d'Or at 26 for Sex, Lies, and Videotape (1989) and an Oscar for Traffic (2000). This guide deliberately looks past the Ocean's trilogy, which has its own watch order on this site, to trace the rest of a restless career: thrillers, issue dramas, crime comedies and micro-budget experiments.

Release order is the way to watch, since these are separate stories. The list below picks ten landmarks in sequence, with a note on each. His pace is famously fast: Presence and Black Bag both arrived in 2025, and The Christophers premiered at TIFF that September before a 2026 theatrical run.

Good to know

Soderbergh is prolific and ongoing, so treat this as landmarks, not completeness: he has directed more than 30 features. The Knick series has its own guide on this site. Two 2025 features, Presence and Black Bag, both play like chamber pieces despite very different genres. Out of Sight and Logan Lucky are the most purely entertaining entry points here.
