About Terrence Malick

Terrence Malick directed Badlands in 1973 and Days of Heaven in 1978, then waited twenty years for The Thin Red Line in 1998. The New World followed in 2005, The Tree of Life in 2011, To the Wonder in 2012, Knight of Cups in 2015 and Song to Song in 2017.

A Hidden Life arrived in 2019 about an Austrian conscientious objector. The Way of the Wind, his Jesus life story shot in 2019, has sat in editing for years with no date. Watch the nine released features in order. They share no continuity, but the visual style narrows from classical narrative toward drifting voiceover.

Good to know

Each film stands alone, so no chronological order exists. Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The Tree of Life and A Hidden Life make the clearest core. The Way of the Wind stays out of the list until it has a real date, after years stuck in post-production. Voyage of Time from 2016 is a companion documentary to Tree of Life and sits outside the features.
