About The Whistler
The Whistler ran for eight Columbia noir films from 1944 to 1948, built on the CBS radio show where a shadowy narrator opens with strange tales. Richard Dix plays a different lead in the first seven, shifting from hero to villain across the run, before retiring and handing the finale to Michael Duane.
The films are standalone anthology cases, so release order is just a convenient walk through the Dix years into the finale. William Castle directed four of them early in his career, which gives horror fans an extra reason to start at the beginning.
Good to know
Release order matches story order in the only sense that applies, since each film has new characters and no continuing plot, so no chronological list is needed. The film voice of the Whistler was the uncredited Otto Forrest across all eight. The series closed with The Return of the Whistler in 1948 and no reboot of the Columbia run has been announced.
