About Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog has directed more than sixty features and documentaries since the 1960s, so this guide picks twelve theatrical keys as a starting path. Signs of Life in 1968 and Even Dwarfs Started Small in 1970 set his tone of isolated dreamers. Aguirre, the Wrath of God in 1972, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser in 1974, Heart of Glass in 1976 and Stroszek in 1977 fixed his image of impossible quests.
Nosferatu the Vampyre and Woyzeck both landed in 1979, followed by Fitzcarraldo in 1982 and Cobra Verde in 1987, the latter closing his run with Klaus Kinski. Grizzly Man in 2005 and Cave of Forgotten Dreams in 2010 show the documentary half of his work. Watch in release order. The films do not connect, and the sequence maps his swing between fevered fiction and patient nonfiction.
Good to know
Herzog has far more than twelve films, so treat this as a curated entry path rather than a complete filmography. The entries are standalone with no shared continuity, which is why release order is the only list here. Later work such as Encounters at the End of the World, Bad Lieutenant and the dated Bucking Fastard from 2026 falls outside this starter pick. Add titles once you know which Herzog mode you like best.
