About Wicked
Wicked (2024) covers the first act of the Broadway musical, following Elphaba and Glinda from Shiz University to the Emerald City meeting with the Wizard. It ends where the stage show takes its intermission, with Elphaba choosing defiance and Glinda staying behind. Wicked: For Good (2025) covers the second act, with Fiyero, the Grimmerie and Dorothy's arrival pushing both friends toward their final choices.
Both films were directed by Jon M. Chu for Universal and opened November 22, 2024 and November 21, 2025. They adapt one musical, not two separate stories, so there is no alternate order to consider. You do not need the 1939 film or the Gregory Maguire novel first. Chu has said the duology is complete, with no third film planned.
Good to know
Release order is story order, with no prequel or flashback to move around. Watch Part One before For Good, since the second film opens mid story and assumes you know Elphaba's decision and Glinda's promise. The stage show runs shorter than the two films combined, since the movies add new songs and expanded Oz scenes. Save the sing along cuts for a rewatch once you know the plot.
