About Wim Wenders
Wim Wenders built his name with the road movie trilogy of Alice in the Cities in 1974, The Wrong Move in 1975 and Kings of the Road in 1976, restless stories of men drifting through West Germany. The American Friend followed in 1977, then Paris, Texas in 1984 won the Palme dOr and gave him his widest audience with its Texas reunion story.
Wings of Desire arrived in 1987 and won him best director at Cannes for its angels over a divided Berlin. Until the End of the World came in 1991, Faraway, So Close in 1993, and Buena Vista Social Club in 1999 documented Cuban musicians with plain warmth. Perfect Days closed this pick in 2023. Watch in release order, since the early drift explains the later tenderness.
Good to know
These are standalone stories with no shared continuity, so there is no chronological order to untangle. Faraway, So Close continues the angel premise of Wings of Desire but works on its own. Documentaries such as Tokyo-Ga, Pina and The Salt of the Earth sit outside this starter pick. Start with Paris, Texas, then Wings of Desire, if ten films feels like too many.
